What is Medical Malpractice Insurance?

Medical Malpractice Insurance provides indemnity cover for medical professionals, which includes acts or omissions in error whilst undertaking their professional duties. The General Medical Council (GMC) requires that all doctors "must make sure you have adequate insurance or indemnity cover so that your patients will not be disadvantaged if they make a claim about the clinical care you have provided in the UK". A doctor's NHS work will be covered by the Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts, however, doctors will need to arrange "adequate insurance or indemnity cover" for any private activities.
